  • Weekly Pay: $1,908 gross weekly; $1,246 stipend and W2 rate $22.39 hour, overtime rate $33.58 hour. 
  • Weekend Requirements: Not required. May be asked to work 1-2/month

  • Requirements: Must have 1 year of ER experience and 1 year of Psych (hospital preferred) experience.  Must have experience with assessments to determine disposition for psych patients as well as experience working with violent patients.  PLS nurses have three primary responsibilities: 1). Direct Patient Care: Provide primary nursing care to two high-risk psychiatric patients in the ED, including medication administrations, restraint use, de-escalation, and coordinating inpatient or state hospital placement.  2). Psychiatric Eval:  Assess all psych patients entering the ER, determine appropriate disposition (inpatient, discharge, involuntary hold), and coordinate necessary steps like placement, safety planning, and transport.  3).  Crisis Response:  Respond to Behavioral Response Team (BRT) calls across the hospital to manage escalated patients through de-escalation, setting limits, restraint, and supporting bedside staff alongside police and nurse managers. BLS Certification.

• Notes:  This is a highly independent role where ED physicians rely on the THP’s psychiatric assessment and disposition plan after medical clearance. Strong psych nursing skills are essential, and more experience is required due to the ED setting. KU is a nicotine-free facility.
